An anonymous local developer has granted us access to two acres of land in the urban corridor of downtown Charlottesville for use as a community garden. Volunteers and guests of The Haven have created raised beds full of strawberries, raspberries, grapes, collard greens, turnips, kale, tomatoes, broccoli, cucumbers, peppers, and tons of potatoes. Two large donated cisterns collect water from area houses to provide water for our seedlings and plants. A compost bin creates rich fertilizer for our beds, while also reducing waste from the kitchen . Together with the Building Goodness Foundation, our guests and volunteers built a large and sturdy storage shed on the site. Food from this garden is used in our kitchen for breakfast and distributed to the guests and volunteers who work it.
